Life as a person with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is not always easy. It can be hard for someone with ADHD to hold an office job or to finish home renovation projects in their Richmond Hill homes. But human beings are never content with their lot. They need to push the boundaries and find new ways of overcoming their limitations. To do that they need to understand exactly how a disorder works. That's where medical research comes in. Here are some of the things medical researchers are looking into right now in order to help people with ADHD.
Chinese Research
The Chinese are relative newcomers to the field of ADHD research but are making up for it by conducting several studies on new ways of treating the disorder that might eventually help a dentist in Mississauga focus better on his work. One study used a medicine derived from cinnamon and twigs, while another combined herbal medicines with acupuncture therapy. A third study is experimenting with applying ear pressure as a means of treating the condition and a fourth combined Chinese and Western medical approaches.
Genetic Research
Genetics is the newest boom sector in medical research, with scientists scrambling to find genes for everything from intelligence to the ability to submit to physio in Toronto. One of the disorders they're trying to identify markers for is ADHD, but this is difficult because the disease is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The first study was done by researchers from the SUNY Medical Center and encompassed 900 families and identified a common gene among those affected. Further studies will use genetics to identify which medicines might suit a patient better.
Links to Depression
Researchers at the University of Chicago are investigating what seems to be a higher proportion of people with ADHD suffering from depression than normal people. The study links poor performance in school with self esteem issues which can lead to needing online therapy. According to the study, 18% of kids with ADHD also suffer from depression.
Links to Substance Abuse
Some scientists and doctors fear that the stimulants used to treat ADHD in children will leave ordinary kids living at 10 Avoca Avenue susceptible to substance abuse later in life. Several hospitals under the National Institute of Health conducted studies that showed that stimulant treatment, even in young children, did not have an affect. However, ADHD sufferers are still at higher risk for substance abuse.
